According to his birth certificate (given to me by my grandmother), my paternal grandfather, George, was born in Seattle, WA on May 30, 1911 to parents named Homer and Minnie. However, we know that George grew up and eventually raised a family in Boston – with different parents. He even had a different name at birth. So what events caused these great changes in his early life, before raising the family that eventually created me? I was determined to piece this puzzle together, so I could better understand where I came from.
Seattle, 2000. I came to this city to find places I had only seen in my mind while researching George’s early life. The house where he was born, how his parents met, the church they were married in, how they died and where they were buried.
Seattle is a crossroad in my past.
